How to Convert SGPA into Percentage
Converting SGPA into percentage is simple arithmetic once you know which formula your institution uses. Finding that formula is the real task.
What SGPA means
SGPA is the semester grade point average: grade points weighted by course credits, divided by total credits for one semester.
SGPA versus CGPA
SGPA covers one semester. CGPA covers all completed semesters. Check which one your formula expects.
What percentage means in results
A percentage is marks obtained out of marks possible. A grade point system does not store raw marks, so any conversion is an approximation unless your institution defines it.
Why methods vary
Institutions use different grade scales and published rules. The same SGPA can give different percentages, as the table shows.
| SGPA | (SGPA - 0.75) x 10 | SGPA x 9.5 | SGPA x 10 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6.0 | 52.5% | 57% | 60% |
| 7.2 | 64.5% | 68.4% | 72% |
| 8.5 | 77.5% | 80.75% | 85% |
| 9.1 | 83.5% | 86.45% | 91% |
Identify the correct formula
- Read your marksheet notes.
- Search the university's examination regulations.
- Ask the examination office in writing if unclear.
Calculate manually
Offset method for 7.2: 7.2 - 0.75 = 6.45; 6.45 x 10 = 64.5%. Multiplier 9.5 for 7.2: 7.2 x 9.5 = 68.4%. Custom (SGPA x 9 + 5) for 8: 8 x 9 = 72; 72 + 5 = 77%.
Avoid rounding errors
Keep all decimals until the last step. 8.37 x 9.5 = 79.515, which rounds to 79.52% at two decimals, but rounding SGPA to 8.4 first would give 79.8%.
When an application asks for percentage
Look for the stated conversion rule or accepted certificate. If none is given, ask the receiving body. Use the SGPA to percentage calculator only for an estimate.
Official requirements come first
If your institution or the receiving organisation specifies a method or certificate, that overrides every online estimate. See the disclaimer.
